How to use the Principles and values site

What is the Social Care Wales Principles and values award?

The Social Care Wales Principles and values award is an online course and assessment based on the first two sections of the All-Wales induction framework for health and social care.

Before starting the course, we recommend that you speak to your worker and check the Social Care Wales website to see if they are already eligible to register with a relevant required qualification or by having suitable workplace experience.

If a worker does not already have an accepted qualification (or suitable experience) they may choose to achieve the Principles and values award to use as evidence to support an application to register.

Once a worker has successfully completed all sections and passed the assessment for their workbook, (either workbook 1 for those working with adults or workbook 2 for those working with children), they will be able to download their Principles and values award certificate. A worker can then use this certificate as evidence to support an application to register, which they will need to make via SCWonline, the Social Care Wales registration site. Once registered, they will need to complete a required qualification by the time they have to renew their registration.

Getting started

Before a worker can complete their award, they will need to be invited to create their own account on the Principles and values award website by a relevant manager.

To be able to invite a worker and evaluate workbooks as a manager you will need to create your own Principles and values account ensuring you select the manager option at sign up. You can do this by heading to https://www.inductionframework.wales/signup/ .

Your manager dashboard

Once you have set up an account and logged in you will be able to see your manager dashboard, this is a series of sections where you can support your worker’s progress with their workbooks.

The first section you will see is called Email Invites.

For a worker to take part in the award you will need to invite them from your dashboard. It is your responsibility to invite workers to complete the award, we cannot do this on your behalf.

Your invitation section of your dashboard looks like:

From here you can add in a worker’s name and email address to send them an email with a personal link (including manager code) to create their own account. Using the link they receive to create their account ensures that they are connected to you as the manager evaluating their workbooks.

Please make sure you have the correct email address for your worker before sending the invite. Your worker must use this email address for all future access to the site, including password reminders.

The invites section of your account shows who you have invited to the site. As you invite people you will see their details add to one of two sections on this page either:

-   Pending invitations, which shows you a list of people you have invited who haven't yet created their account

Or

-   the Recently joined section which shows you the people you have invited who have created their account.

Once a worker creates their account, selecting if they work with children or adults they will be given access to their workbook.

The worker must complete each question in their workbook ensuring it is saved before they will be able to submit it to you for evaluation.

If a worker has already completed the workbook offline, and you are happy for them to do so they can add any text in the screens to be able to save them and proceed through the site. For example, it may be suitable to add “completed offline”. This can be copied and pasted into every section to allow them to submit the workbook.

For example:

Content must be added to all question on all screens in a workbook for the site to recognise that the workbook is ready to submit.

Once the worker completes all sections and clicks submit, the workbook will be locked with a status of being evaluated. It will then show in your account on your manager dashboard under the submitted workbooks heading.

Review workbooks section

This page has two sections, submitted workbooks and preview workbook progress.

The preview workbook section shows you the progress a worker is making on a workbook by allowing you to view it. Workbooks in this section that only have the view option have not yet been submitted for evaluation by the worker, this means that as the manager you can see it but cannot yet evaluate it.

Once a worker submits a workbook it will move up under the submitted workbooks area and will offer you an evaluate button.

By clicking the evaluate button on a workbook in this section you will be asked to evaluate the evidence your worker has provided and either approve or reject the workbook sections. You are reminded that it is your responsibility to check that a worker’s evidence is true and correct. If it is subsequently found that you have not properly evaluated a worker’s evidence, you could face allegations of not complying with the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care which could result in an investigation into your fitness to practise.

Comments are not mandatory for managers to complete but boxes are available for you to give feedback on the work should you wish to do so. Once you have decided to approve a workbook section and have clicked approve the system will change that section to passed and you will not need to evaluate it again.

If you feel a section is incomplete or requires more information you should click reject, this will give the worker another chance to see your comments and add to their work. You must ensure all sections of the workbook have been evaluated (either approved or rejected) before the system will return the workbook to the worker.

If you have rejected any sections of a workbook, the worker will be able to add to them and resubmit the workbook to you to evaluate again.

When you have approved all sections of the worker’s workbook, the Assessment section will unlock in the worker’s account for them to attempt. When the worker’s workbook is complete and they have passed their assessment, they will have gained their certificate which will be available to download in their account.

Useful information- for managers

How do I change my worker’s manager?

To change someone's manager we would need the worker to contact us directly.

Please could you ask the worker needing to change the manager linked to their Principles and values award account to email induction@socialcare.wales

In the email the worker will need to confirm the name and the email address for the new manager that they would like linked to their account.

Someone has left our organisation how do I remove them from my dashboard?

You will see a small cross next to a person’s name on your dashboard, clicking this unlinks you as their manager and will remove them from your lists. If they have not yet created their account another manager will be able to invite them. If a worker has already created their account, the worker’s account will still exist, but the worker will no longer be able to log in, instead they will see a message asking them to contact us by emailing induction@socialcare.wales to link them to a new manager.

Where can I find the option to evaluate my worker’s workbook?

Workbooks that have not been submitted are only able to be viewed, this is for you to be able to see the progress of a workbook. Workbooks in progress will show in your manager dashboard under the Preview workbook progress section.

Only once a worker has finished all sections of the workbook and clicked on the submit button will the workbook become available for you to evaluate. Once submitted it should move to under the heading Submitted Workbooks on your manager dashboard and the evaluate option will become available.

If you believe a workbook to be complete but it is not listed under the ‘Submitted Workbooks’ section of your dashboard we would advise that the worker check that they have saved each section of the workbook and ensured that they have clicked the submit button for the work to reach you.

I / my worker have a technical issue with my Principles and values award account, what should I do?

If you have a technical issue with your account please let us know by sending an email to induction@socialcare.wales please ensure your email includes your name, the email address you used to create your account, information about the error or issue and confirmation if you would be happy for us to change your password and log into your account to investigate further.

Why are there seven workbooks and which ones do my worker’s need to complete?

The Principles and values award is part of a bigger induction called the All-Wales induction framework. To complete the Principles and values award your worker will only need to complete and pass either workbook 1 if they work with adults or workbook 2 if they work with children. As the award can only be achieved once, if your worker works with both groups (children and adults) we recommend you speak with them and that they complete the workbook for the group, they predominantly work with. Once a worker has completed either workbook 1 or 2 and passed the assessment, they will have gained the Principles and values award and can apply to register with Social Care Wales.

Workbooks 3-7 are another part of the All-Wales induction framework these can be used to support the completion of an induction for staff who need it. Anyone wishing to use the site to also complete workbook 3-7 as part of a wider induction will find that these workbooks unlock once they have submitted their Principles and values award. Please note there are no assessments for workbooks 3-7 as these workbooks are not mandatory and make up part of the wider framework full information about the All-Wales induction framework including the required progress logs  can be found on the Social Care Wales website.

My worker has completed the Principles and Values Award what do they need to do next?

To register your worker will need to make an application using their certificate as evidence. You can find out more about registering on our website at https://socialcare.wales/registration

To make an application to register please go to www.scwonline.wales  your worker will need to create an SCWonline account and complete and submit the required application form. Please note that SCWonline and the Principles and values award site require separate accounts.
